​Student portraits compiled from Calhoun Middle School's 1978 Cougar yearbook show the changing face of public schools in Denton, Texas following desegregation. 

Public School segregation was declared unconstitutional in 1954 by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, but it would take another decade to abolish the practice across the nation. The Denton school board voted unanimously to integrate Denton ISD schools beginning August 1963, when 11% of Denton ISD’s students were African-American.
